【学习经历】
1968年毕业于北京中国科学技术大学物理系；
1987年获德克萨斯大学奥斯汀校区物理学博士。GPA:4.0（总平均成绩为满分）；
博士论文：“非线性动力学与经济周期理论”。
导师：普里戈金 (Ilya Prigogine) 教授，1977年诺贝尔化学奖获得者，非平衡态统计物理与耗散结构理论奠基人。跨学科的指导委员会包扩宇宙大爆炸模型和交通流科学的先驱者赫曼(Robert Herman)和两名经济学家：提出经济成长阶段论的罗斯托(Walt Rostow)和 Divisia 货币指数的创始人巴奈特(William Barnett)。
【工作经历】
1968年至1974年，任成都铁路分局电工。业余研究理论物理，科学技术史，和经济史；
1974年至1979年，任中国科学院合肥等离字体物理研究所实习研究员，研究受控热核反应。
1978年，被借调筹备全国科学大会工作，开始参与科技教育体制改革的讨论；
1979年至1980年，作为合肥中国科学技术大学近代物理系研究生，参与农业政策改革的讨论和人才学的研究，被聘为安徽省政协特邀委员；
1980年秋，赴美国作理论物理学的研究生；
1981年起，师从德克萨斯大学普里戈金教授研究非平衡物理学、非线性演化动力学、与复杂系统科学；1985年首先发现经济混沌的经验证据；
1988至2002年，先后任美国德克萨斯大学奥斯汀校区普里戈金统计力学与复杂系统研究中心研究员和研究科学家；
1988年至1989年，任中国留美经济学会第三届会长；
1988年至1994年，任北京大学管理科学研究所副教授；
1999年至今，任北京大学中国经济研究中心教授，博士生导师；
2004年至今，任复旦大学新政治经济学研究中心高级研究员，学术委员会主任。
2010年起，被邀为美国哥伦比亚大学资本主义与社会研究中心外籍研究员。
目前兼任美国德克萨斯大学奥斯汀校区复杂量子系统中心客座研究员；南开大学经济史研究所兼职教授；被聘为社会劳动保障部、国家开发银行、上海市政府、安徽凤阳县政府的专家顾问。

宏观经济学，金融经济学，微观经济学，计量经济学，制度经济学，复杂经济学，政治经济学，转型与发展经济学，演化经济学，文化人类学，经济史，科学学等。
