Peter Kemp is the Barnett Professor of Social Policy and a professorial fellow of St Cross College, Oxford. He has been Head of the Department of Social Policy and Social Work since October 2007.
Peter moved to Oxford in April 2006, having previously held professorial appointments at the universities of Glasgow and York.
He has published extensively on a wide range of housing policy topics, including housing allowances, private rental housing, and homelessness. His research interests now include social security, particularly in relation to people on the margins of the labour market.
Peter’s recent books include Private Renting in Transition (2004), Sick Societies? Trends in Disability Benefits in Post-industrial Societies (2006), Cash and Care: Policy Challenges in the Welfare State (2006), and Housing Allowances in Comparative Perspective (2007).
He was general-secretary of The Foundation for International Studies on Social Security (FISS) until 2009. He is a member of the Department for Work and Pensions’ Housing Benefit Strategy Committee and has been appointed Special Advisor to the House of Commons Select Committee on Work and Pensions' inquiry into the Local Housing Allowance.
